VERTUS

I stagger as my magic is almost completely drained. My Little Phoenix’s twin steps backwards, trying to keep his balance, but I ignore him, scanning the area behind the other two, who have decided they need to try and keep me from Ember. She steps to the side, just enough that I can see her behind their hulking forms. Her eyes are closed, but as she opens them, they lock with my own and then, in a blink, she’s gone.

It appears my Little Phoenix has learnt to teleport since we’ve been apart. She’s just full of surprises.

“What just happened?” Both twins look behind them at the empty space where Ember had just been standing.

“Where’s Pipes?” Skylar stumbles as he moves too quickly. She must have syphoned from him, too. He knocks into the Greene twin Atticus had initially chosen to spar with Ember. I know my Little Phoenix, though; she wouldn’t have really fought him. Hell, she held back against me, and I deserve every ounce of pain she can inflict on me after the Representative Chambers yesterday.

I knew they wanted to see some of her memories, but when Becer briefed me ahead of the meeting, he made it sound as though Ember knew. When her father reassured her differently, I knew the Representatives had misled us, and there was nothing I could do. That building has too many eyes, too many ears. If I’d warned them, or refused, I wouldn’t have been able to pick my latest assignment, and I need to be near her. I need to ensure she’s safe, that EvoGen or those like them don’t come after her again.

I’m roughly pulled from my thoughts and back to the present by Skylar gripping my shirt in his fists and shaking me.

“What did you do!? Where’s my sister!?” His anger is understandable, although misplaced. Before I can answer him or move to break his hold on me, it begins to snow. In the middle of summer… and on one of the hottest days of the year so far. Our motley group all pause and look up at the sky darkening overhead. Bursts of fire shoot up from a distance to the east, from the general direction of Ember’s new home.

“Does your house back onto the lake?” I ask the three youths, trying to recall the exact address of Lieutenant General Petrov-Ward.

“What does that have to do with anything, Vertus?” Atticus pulls his glasses off and glares at me.

“Ember is my Anchor. She syphoned my magic, and I’d guess Skylar’s too, so she could teleport. I wasn’t aware she could do that, or I would have taken steps to prevent it, but that’s an aside. She’ll need to expel the excess magical energy she absorbed; we’re not there, so she can’t return it to us.”

“And you think that’s the cause of the snow and… fire show?”

“Yes, if she channels the magic into the lake in addition to manipulating the temperature of the air around her… I’ve seen her do something similar before, on a much smaller scale.
